The late 90s and early 2000s marked the golden age of ICE (In-Car Entertainment) - a time when car audio was pushed to extremes. Max Power documented the wildest boot builds, featuring elaborate fiberglass enclosures, massive subwoofers, PlayStation integrations, and neon lighting effects that transformed ordinary vehicles into mobile nightclubs.
SPL competitions and sound-off meets were the battlegrounds where enthusiasts showcased their builds, pushing decibel levels to ear-shattering heights. Featured below are some of the most iconic ICE installations that graced the pages of Max Power.
VIBE AUDIO SAXO
Boot filled with fiberglass enclosures molded to look like alien tech, housing twin amplifiers and neon-lit subwoofers. The centerpiece was a motorized display screen that rose from the custom enclosure. This iconic Saxo competed in SPL competitions across the UK and featured on two Max Power covers.
FUSION AUDIO IMPREZA
This landmark Subaru Impreza boot installation featured a wall of 12 subwoofers powered by 8 amplifiers. The display case enclosure was constructed with tinted acrylic panels, LED underlighting, and a bootlid-mounted TV screen. The entire rear interior was rebuilt with suede and fiberglass panels to match the exterior color scheme.
KENWOOD SUPRA
The first Max Power sponsored Supra featured a 14-speaker setup with a PlayStation 2 console integrated into the dash and a 17" flip-down screen for rear passengers. The trunk included a vinyl record-shaped subwoofer enclosure that rotated on a motorized display stand. Rear doors were modified with additional mid-range speakers and tweeters to create a true surround sound experience.
